The Menominee Maroons finished the season 9-0 and were named the Class AB Team of the Year. Senior Single-Wing back Ethan Shaver (6-0, 191) was named Class ABC Offensive Player of the Year. He rushed for 1,052 yards and 14 TDs and passed for 761 yards and eight more scores out of the Maroons single-wing offense. Shaver is the defending U.P. Division 1 100-meter sprint champion.







Returning all-stater, senior linebacker Matt Eisenzoph (6-0, 214), was named Class ABC Defensive Player of the Year. He also plays fullback for the Maroons.

718: Rushing yards gained by the Sigourney-Keota (Sigourney, Iowa) football team in its 80-30 victory over Eddyville-Blakesburg (Eddyville, Iowa) on Oct. 5.The Savage Cobras set the state record of rushing yards in a game, breaking the previous mark of 672 set by Madrid in 2000. S-K also had four 100-yard rushers in the game as Brandon Lyle gained 182 yards, Keaton Grainer ran for 169, Dylan Horning garnered 156 and Luke Schwenke picked up 125.

SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney-Keota Cobras tuned up for the playoffs with a 53-6 win over Albia Friday night in Sigourney. The S-K formula was the standard game plan and results — 448 yards rushing and 39 yards passing.


S-K will open the Class 2A playoffs on Wednesday, when the Cobras will travel to the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls to take on North Fayette. Kickoff is slated for 6:15 p.m.

The Blue Demons opened the game with a nine-play drive that ended in a punt. The short punt gave S-K the ball at their own 39 and five plays later, Kory Schwenke scored on a 23-yard run to open the scoring.

After an Albia three and out, the Cobras went 69 yards in just six plays. The touchdown was a 12 yard run by Keaton Greiner. Greiner led S-K with 218 yards rushing on just eight carries.

“This was probably my best rushing total. I basically ran the same play all night and the guys up front made it work,” said Greiner.

The 16-0 lead went to 24-0 on the next S-K play from scrimmage. After another Albia three and out, Nathan Hemsley hit Scotty Appelget on a 39 yard touchdown pass. Hensley, who looks like the quarterback in an offense that doesn’t use a quarterback, talked about his role.

“Basically I’m a lead blocker that throws a couple of passes a game.”

The Blue Demons lone touchdown came early in the second quarter. A 10-play Albia drive included three pass completions from quarterback Chad Lathrop to split end Brett Maloy — the last of which went for an 18-yard touchdown. The drive also had Lathrop and Maloy reversing roles for a 17-yard completion to keep the drive alive.

S-K coach Clint Howard talked about his defense.

“This was one of our top three defensive efforts of the year. We held them to -1 yards rushing in the first half. We gave up a couple of passes and probably always will,” said Howard.

S-K put a stop to the Blue Demon success by scoring just 19 seconds later. The first play after the kickoff return, Greiner had his longest run of the night for a 70-yard ground trip to the end zone.

S-K scored twice more in the second quarter. With just over five minutes to go in the half, Dillon Horning scored from two yards out. Three minutes later Greiner added a 44 yard run for his third touchdown of the game.

“Our running game continues to improve because our offensive line has played together enough now that they can make calls at the line and adjust to what the defense is trying to do,” said Howard.

The half ended with S-K up 46-6.

The running clock and lots of carries for S-K back up running backs limited the scoring in the second half.


Albia’s inability to run the ball forced them to pass and that was to the liking of defensive end Ryan Carr.


“Most of the time I just rush the passer, and tonight we were able to force him into some throws that were tough,” said Carr. Brandon Lyle and Greiner would have interceptions in the second half for the Cobras. Lyle’s came off an Albia fake punt.

Greiner closed out the scoring with his fourth touchdown. A 64 yard run with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.

“We didn’t want to back in and so our guys came out and played hard. We got enough done tonight to get ready,” said Howard.

S-K awaits an opponent for Wednesday night’s first round play-off.

Albia coach Gary Gravert commented on his team.

“We’ve had some of the best guys to coach this year. We didn’t play well tonight, but I’m proud of our seniors for hanging in there all season,”

APOPKA - Someone named Jeremy is often the catalyst to Apopka's success offensively.

And while quarterback Jeremy Gallon contributed with two passing touchdowns, it was running back Jeremy Rouse whose four-touchdown game punished East Ridge (5-4, 3-1) to give the Blue Darters the Class 6A, District 4 title, 48-16 Friday night.

Apopka (8-1, 4-0) clinched the district for the second consecutive year.

"Awesome," Apopka Coach Rick Darlington said. "This is a great, great thing. It's exciting for our seniors."

Throughout the first half, East Ridge was able to neutralize Gallon on the ground, holding him to 16 yards. But Rouse rushed for 100 yards in the first half and finished with a game-high 174. Rouse rushed for three touchdowns and accounted for a fourth on a pass from Gallon.

East Ridge's offensive and special-teams woes gave Apopka a short field early. East Ridge quarterback Tyler Dye completed seven of his 16 passes and threw one interception in the first half. Some of Dye's incompletions were the result of dropped passes and others were near-interceptions.

A bobbled snap on a punt gave the Blue Darters the ball at East Ridge's 21-yard line in the first quarter. Three plays later, Rouse scored his second touchdown on an 18-yard run.

Rouse's first touchdown came on a 10-yard run. His third was a 61-yard run.

Apopka senior Derrick Clark also contributed multiple touchdowns, one on each side of the ball. Clark caught one touchdown pass with no time left in the second quarter, then returned an interception for a 68-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

"We were in the zone and I just read my quarterback, read my man," Clark said.
