Sigourney-Keota breaks state rushing record
SIGOURNEY — The yards just kept coming and they never stopped.
The Sigourney-Keota Savage Cobra football squad did a lot more than just improve its record to 4-2 on Friday night versus Eddyville-Blakesburg.
S-K broke the state record for team rushing yards with an 80-30 shellacking of the Rockets.
The Savage Cobras had four different players crack the century mark in rushing and racked up 718 yards rushing — more than any high school team in the state has ever achieved.
S-K broke Madrid’s 672 yards rushing in 2000.
“We get better on offense every week,” said S-K head coach Clint Howard.
The Savage Cobras led 61-24 at intermission.
Brandon Lyle (182), Keaton Greiner (169), Dylan Horning (156) and Kory Schwenke (125) were S-K’s 100 yard rushers.
Greiner scored three times while Lyle and Horning found the end zone twice.
E-B rushed for 208 yards and totaled 373 total yards.
The two teams combined for a whopping 1,136 yards and the contest involved 16 touchdowns, seven alone in the second quarter.
The Rockets’ Jacob Batterson scored on an 85-yard touchdown run and E-B signal-caller Dimitri Boyer rushed for 104 yards on the ground with a score from 45 yards out.
E-B’s Ben Taylor caught two touchdown passes from Boyer, one that went for 90 yards. Taylor had four receptions for 138 yards.
S-K (4-2, 3-1) puts it on the line at home on Friday versus Prairie City-Monroe. PCM (5-1, 4-0) is tied atop the Class 2A, District 7 standings alongside fellow unbeaten C-M-B Baxter.
