Holley's Hills too tough for Barker

BARKER — The Holley Hawks more than made up for a winless 2008 by dominating both sides of the football Saturday in their opening day 30-6 Section V victory over the Barker Raiders.

Under bright sunny skies, Hawks senior quarterback Guy Hills rushed for daylight, scoring three touchdowns, as head coach Chad DeRock’s team pounded the ball successfully on the ground throughout, dominating offensive time-of-possession by almost four-to-one (37:26 to 10:34).

“Offensively, we didn’t get a lot going today,” Barker coach Bill Bruning said. “Defensively we had a lot of missed tackles and some dumb mistakes that hurt us. They ran the ball well and they kind of wore us out there at the end.”

Hills was 0-for-3 passing on the day, but countered — literally — with 75 rushing yards. Fellow seniors Sean Baylor (82 yards, 16 carries) and Mike Pernicano (65 yards, 12 carries, TD) also kept the chains moving. The Hawks out-rushed the Raiders 299-28 and earned 17 first downs in the contest, compared to Barker’s five.

“This is a big win for us. We’ve worked extremely hard in the offseason to get to this point. Good teams just don’t appear at game time,” said Hawks head coach Chad DeRock.

“We’re obviously a pound-the-ball team and we spent a lot of time in the weight room over the summer to maintain that. We came in today with an attitude that if we couldn’t run the ball then we couldn’t win.”

One of the Raiders’ only bright spots came on the opening kickoff of the second half as sophomore Austin Blackley took the ball on his own 18, started right, cut up the middle, then turned left and was gone for an 88-yard touchdown.

Barker quarterback Ethan Dewart completed his first three passes, finishing 4-of-8 for 13 yards, and led his team in rushing with 24 yards on five carries.

Defensively for the Raiders, Junior Jacob Greenwald had 20 tackles (13 solo, seven assisted), Asaad Smider had 14 tackles (seven solo), Cody Blackley contributed 12 tackles (five solo) and Joshua Sonberg chipped in with 10 tackles (four solo).
