Stone Bridge Looking to Make Most of Postseason
Tuesday, November 27, 2007; E05
Stone Bridge has reached the state playoffs for the fourth time in six years, one of the best postseason runs of any school in the area.
But the Bulldogs, 68-9 during that span, are still seeking their first title. They lost to Lafayette and Powhatan, respectively, in the Division 4 semifinals in 2002 and 2003 and beat Matoaca in a Division 5 semifinal in 2005 before falling to Hampton in the state final.
"That state semifinal has been kind of a tough one for us," Stone Bridge Coach Mickey Thompson said Friday after his team's 27-14 win over Edison in the Division 5 Northern Region final.
The Bulldogs (12-1) get to play their Group AAA Division 5 semifinal game at home on Saturday but they face another tough draw.
Phoebus (13-0), which won a state titles in three of the past six years including last season, is fresh off a 26-0 win over Indian River, the Phantoms' fifth shutout in their last seven games.
